It’s recommended to brush your teeth after every meal, especially while in treatment. When you’re at school though, this can prove to be easier said than done. Pack a travel kit in your backpack (like the one we provide you with the day you get your braces on), so you can brush your teeth at school! Your travel kit should have a toothbrush, toothpaste and some floss so you can clean your teeth after lunch. You should also pack some extra rubber bands or elastics if needed, and some dental wax in case your braces begin to irritate your mouth.
Something to keep in mind when you’re wearing braces is that there are foods you’ll need to avoid. Some of these foods that you’ll have to stay away from include foods that are hard and sticky. Schools won’t always provide foods that are suitable for braces wearers, so pack your own lunches occasionally. We recommend bringing foods like sandwiches, chopped fruit and vegetables, or yogurt. Be sure to drink plenty of water. It won’t just keep your mouth clean, but it will fight bad breath and help prevent cavities as well.
If you’re wearing retainers, one of the most important things you can do is bring a retainer case with you. If your retainer isn’t in your mouth, make sure it’s in your retainer case. There have been many instances where a retainer is lost or thrown away by accident. Using a napkin is never a good idea! Use a retainer case and keep it in your backpack to ensure it’s secure!
