The answer is “YES”!
Patients may assume they don’t need to see their general dentist during orthodontic treatment, since they see Dr. Hassey for orthodontic check-ups regularly, but everyone should visit their dentist for a routine cleaning every six months. It is especially important for patients who are having orthodontic treatment. Some may even need a dental cleaning every three months.
Here are some reasons:
1. Oral appliances, braces, Invisalign attachments, etc., can create additional places for bacteria and food particles to hide. This bacteria can lead to cavities and/or decalcification (loss of calcium) in the teeth. Decalcification appears as unsightly white spots on the teeth, and is irreversible. Bad oral hygiene may also lead to gum infections or gum disease. While brushing and flossing at home play a part in keeping these problems at bay, frequent dental cleanings help ensure plaque and debris are removed as completely as possible.
2. Cavities and bad oral hygiene can delay orthodontic treatment. Who wants to be in braces longer than needed? No one!
3. Your dentist performs a different role in caring for your teeth than we do. Orthodontists are specialists who focus on the alignment of the teeth and jaws. General dentists oversee your dental cleanings and any restorative work you may need.
Dr. Hassey works closely with your general dentist to coordinate a treatment plan that’s best for you — to give you a healthy and beautiful smile. If you’re interested in straightening your teeth or correcting your bite, give us a call to schedule a complimentary consultation.
