Frequently Asked Questions About Orthodontic Treatment

At what age should my child have their first orthodontic evaluation?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this age, Dr. Hassey can spot developing bite and jaw issues such as crossbites, crowding, and underbites while there is still time to guide growth. Many children won’t need treatment right away, but an early visit helps us plan the ideal timing. Learn more about orthodontic treatment for all ages.

How do I know if I need orthodontic treatment?

Common signs include crooked or crowded teeth, gaps between teeth, teeth that don’t meet properly when you bite, jaw discomfort, difficulty chewing, or speech issues. Some bite problems aren’t obvious to the eye, which is why a professional evaluation is so valuable. Browse the orthodontic conditions we treat or schedule a complimentary consultation for a definitive answer.

What orthodontic treatment options does Camino Real Orthodontics offer?

We offer traditional metal braces, clear ceramic braces, Invisalign and Invisalign Teen, and Phase 1 interceptive treatment for younger children. Every treatment plan is customized to the patient’s bite, goals, and lifestyle.

What is the difference between metal braces, clear braces, and Invisalign?

Metal braces use stainless steel brackets and wires and offer maximum control for complex cases. Clear braces work the same way but use tooth-colored ceramic brackets that blend in with your smile. Invisalign uses a series of removable, nearly invisible aligners that gradually shift teeth. Dr. Hassey will walk you through the pros and cons of each option for your specific case.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Most comprehensive treatment takes between 12 and 24 months. Mild cases may be finished sooner, while complex bite corrections can take longer. Your personalized timeline will be shared at your consultation, and consistent appointments and good habits help keep treatment on schedule.

Does orthodontic treatment hurt?

Orthodontic treatment is not painful, though it’s normal to feel some pressure or soreness for a few days after braces are placed, after adjustments, or when switching to a new set of aligners. Soft foods and over-the-counter pain relievers usually help. Most patients adjust quickly and find treatment very manageable.

How often will I need to come in for appointments?

Patients with braces typically visit every 4 to 8 weeks for adjustments, while Invisalign patients may come in every 6 to 10 weeks to check progress and pick up new aligners. With two offices on El Camino Real — our Carlsbad office and our La Costa office — scheduling around school and work is easy.

Can adults get orthodontic treatment?

Absolutely. There is no age limit for healthy teeth to be moved. Many of our patients are adults who choose Invisalign or clear braces for a discreet option. Adult treatment can also address bite issues, teeth that have shifted over time, and wear caused by misalignment.

What is Phase 1 orthodontic treatment?

Phase 1, or interceptive treatment, is an early stage of care for children typically between ages 6 and 10. It focuses on guiding jaw growth, creating room for permanent teeth, and correcting problems like crossbites or open bites before they become more difficult to treat. A second phase is often completed once all permanent teeth have come in.

Will I need to wear a retainer after treatment?

Yes. Retainers keep your teeth in their new positions while the surrounding bone and gums stabilize. Without consistent retainer wear, teeth naturally tend to drift back. Our team will explain exactly how and when to wear your retainer to protect your results for years to come.

What foods should I avoid with braces?

Avoid hard, sticky, and chewy foods such as popcorn, hard candy, gum, caramel, ice, hard nuts, and whole raw carrots or apples (cut them into small pieces instead). These foods can break brackets or bend wires and extend treatment time. Invisalign patients can eat normally because aligners are removed for meals.

How do I care for my teeth during orthodontic treatment?

Brush after every meal, floss daily using a floss threader or orthodontic flosser, and keep up with regular cleanings at your general dentist every six months. Invisalign patients should brush before putting aligners back in. Good hygiene prevents cavities, gum inflammation, and white spots during treatment.

Is Invisalign as effective as braces?

For many patients, yes. Invisalign can correct crowding, spacing, and many bite problems, including overbites and mild underbites. Success depends on wearing aligners 20 to 22 hours per day. Some complex cases are better suited to braces, and Dr. Hassey will give you an honest recommendation.

What happens if I have a broken bracket or lost aligner?

Call our office at (760) 434-2288 - Carlsbad Office or (760) 434-2288 - La Costa Office as soon as possible. A loose bracket or poking wire is rarely an emergency, but we’ll schedule a visit to repair it. If you lose an aligner, we may have you move to your next set or wear your previous one until a replacement arrives.

Does Camino Real Orthodontics accept insurance for orthodontic treatment?

Yes. We are preferred providers with many major insurance plans, including Aetna, Cigna Dental, Delta Dental, Guardian, MetLife, and United Concordia, and we accept all PPO plans. Our team will review your benefits and help you maximize your coverage. Visit our payment options and insurance page for details.

How much does orthodontic treatment cost?

The cost depends on the complexity of your case, the treatment type, and its length. We’ll provide a clear estimate before treatment begins. We offer interest-free financing, no initial down payment, paid-in-full discounts, and easy credit card autopay to make care affordable for every family.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes. Your initial consultation is complimentary and includes a digital scan and photographs, a thorough smile evaluation, and a one-on-one meeting with Dr. Hassey. You’ll leave knowing your treatment options, your approximate timeline, and your investment.
