As parents in Carlsbad, we constantly juggle milestones. From the first day of kindergarten to signing up for local soccer leagues or swim lessons, we are always trying to stay one step ahead of our children’s development. However, one question we hear frequently at Camino Real Orthodontics often causes confusion: “When is the right time to bring my child in for a check-up?” Many parents assume they should wait until all the baby teeth have fallen out or until the teenage years arrive. You might be surprised to learn that the American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first visit much earlier—by age seven.

Why age seven? It might seem young, especially if your child’s smile looks perfectly fine to the untrained eye. However, by this age, the first adult molars have typically erupted, establishing the back bite. This allows Dr. Michael Hassey to evaluate tooth relationships and jaw growth with a trained eye. At this stage, we can spot subtle issues with jaw development and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present. Think of it as a “well-baby check” for the mouth; it is about gathering information and ensuring everything is developing as it should.

Visiting us early does not necessarily mean your child will get braces immediately. In fact, in many cases, immediate treatment isn’t necessary at all. Instead, we may simply place your child in our observation program. This allows Dr. Hassey to monitor their growth periodically—at no cost to you—to determine the optimal time to begin treatment. This “timing is everything” approach ensures that we treat issues when they are most easily correctable, often preventing the need for more invasive treatments like tooth extractions or jaw surgery later in life.

For the children who do need early intervention (often called Phase I treatment), the benefits are significant. We can guide jaw growth, lower the risk of trauma to protruded front teeth, correct harmful oral habits, and improve the way the lips meet. By addressing these structural issues early, we can make the eventual teenage phase of orthodontics much shorter and easier. It is all about setting the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles, rather than just fixing crooked teeth after the fact.

We know that a doctor’s office can sometimes be intimidating for young children, which is why we have worked hard to make Camino Real Orthodontics a fun, safe, and welcoming environment. Our team is fantastic with kids, helping to explain everything in simple, non-scary terms. We want your child to feel excited about their smile journey, not anxious. Whether they attend one of our great local elementary schools or are just starting middle school, we want them to feel like they are visiting friends when they walk through our doors.

If you have a child over the age of seven who hasn’t seen an orthodontist yet, or if you have a teen who is starting to feel self-conscious about their smile, now is the time to act. There is no need for a referral from a dentist to come see us. We offer complimentary consultations where we can take a look, answer all your questions, and give you peace of mind about your child’s dental future.
